History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in 1919. The company was initially established by an engineer Anton Raky. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The company's first name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
In the year 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was purchased by the Salzgitter Group for constructing drilling machines. In 1986, the company acquired the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the following years. Now, SMAG is the market leader in the world, using grabs for global cargo handling applications, agriculture and waste disposal.
